Classical Greek Theatre

The true origins of all theatre, the classical Greeks were the first to use theatre as a tool for education. Bound by strict conventions, all of which you will learn about on the course, the Classical Greek style is still studied today and is a vital background to any advanced level or 16+ course.

We focus, for the main part of the week, on tragedy looking in detail at the particular style of the Greeks. You will learn about the use of full masks, the chorus, including sound scaping and choral chants and the way in which the plays were constructed and performed.

As always background is given on the society of the time, the politics that affected the playwrights, the role of theatre and the design of the amphitheatre.

This course is a must for anyone studying drama or theatre at any stage and provides a concise look at the theatre that shaped every type of drama that has come since.

Our next Greek's course will be run in 2009 with applications being available in the summer of 2008.
